This week much of the United States is celebrating National 4-H week.
Our family and many of our friends have grown up in the 4-H community in our state. There are so many opportunities for children to grow their natural strengths as well as in other areas they might not be able to without the program.
The projects I was in are nothing like the ones my children are enrolled in. I am not a baker but my daughter had the opportunity to pair with others who do. Because of that she received her first award of excellence at the North Dakota State Fair. She also received a grand champion junior showmanship at our county achievement days for her gilt (a young female pig). My children are involved in shooting sports, communication arts, crop production, painting, and the list goes on.
4-H teaches kids leadership, opportunity, character, service to others, and confidence. Most of them make lifelong friendships through their clubs, the state camps, or other regional events.
It’s also generational. I am now going to events and seeing others I was in 4-H with, and our children are competing together. It shows the value we have for the organization.
This year’s theme is Inspire Kids to Do…and that’s what 4-H does!
Over the years it has expanded exponentially to robotics, engineering, space study, and so many other technology based themes. Rural and urban, alike, 4-H is growing by leaps and bounds. We are so lucky to have this for our children and families.
This year 4-H club activities included scavenger hunts and #National4HWeek Spirit Day, where we all wore 4-H gear to help us introduce ourselves and get conversations going with others about joining.
It’s so important that our next generation learns to be leaders and followers. This organization starts at a young age and continues into college. It also includes adult members as alumni groups!
