Yesterday was Taco Tuesday, which actually got its start at the popular restaurant chain Taco John's. The restaurant chain held a trademark on the "Taco Tuesday" name until Taco Bell challenged the trademark. Rather than spend millions of dollars, Taco John's relinquished the trademark in 1989 so now EVERYONE can use the #tacotuesday phrase.
If you are a follower of Taco Tuesday, because you love tacos, we have great news for you. Today is National Taco Day! How cool is that?
Even up here in the north country, we enjoy our tacos. Warm, seasoned beef, delectable cheese, maybe a dollop of sour cream, onions, a few black olives and.... are you hungry yet?
Here are some interesting taco facts to share with your family and friends on this National Taco Day.
National Taco Day in the United States is celebrated on October 4th each year.
Taco origin: Tacos are believed to date back to ancient Mexican civilizations. According to Smithsonian Magazine, the word "taco" itself is believed to have originated from the silver mines in Mexico in the 18th century, where small explosives were used to extract ore. Tacos were named after the pieces of paper wrapped around gunpowder that miners used to create small, handheld explosives.
Versatile fillings: Tacos come in a wide variety of fillings, from traditional choices like carne asada (grilled beef), al pastor (marinated pork), and carnitas (slow-cooked pork) to more modern options like tofu, fish, shrimp, and even dessert tacos.
Taco styles: Tacos can be served in various styles, including soft tacos, hard-shell tacos, and even puffy tacos. Soft tacos use pliable tortillas (usually corn or flour), while hard-shell tacos are typically made from fried corn tortillas. Puffy tacos are deep-fried until they puff up and become crispy.
Toppings galore: Tacos are known for their diverse toppings, such as salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and more. The choice of toppings can vary widely depending on regional and personal preferences.
Guinness World Record: The largest flour taco ever made was created in 2003 in Mexico. It measured 1,654 lbs., and was made by the city of Mexicali and Cocinex SA de CV, in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.
National Dish of Mexico: Tacos are so beloved in Mexico that they are often considered the country's national dish. They are enjoyed throughout the year and on various occasions, from street food stalls to fine dining restaurants.
Tacos start on a farm: Tortillas are made from corn and/or wheat. The meat comes from cows, pigs, chickens or fish. The cheese comes from cows. The onions, olives, lettuce, and tomatoes are all grown on farms across the country as well.
