As we reach the half-way point of Dairy Month, we thought it would be good to share again why dairy is such a good choice for people to include in their diet. You probably already know some of them but it never hurts to have a refresher:
-
Dairy is an excellent source of calcium: Milk, cheese, and yogurt, are all rich in calcium. Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth, as well as for proper muscle and nerve function. Many milk alternatives are fortified with similar amounts of calcium, but according to the Mayo Clinic, if the alternative contains the natural compound phylate, calcium uptake is inhibited.
-
Dairy products are also protein-rich: High-quality protein found in dairy is necessary for building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting overall growth and development.
-
Vitamin D: Some dairy products, such as fortified milk, contain vitamin D. This vitamin helps your body absorb calcium, contributing to bone health and potentially reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
-
Source of essential nutrients: Dairy products contain essential nutrients like phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins B2 (riboflavin) and B12. These nutrients play important roles in various bodily functions.
-
Weight management: Consuming dairy products as part of a balanced diet can aid in weight management. The protein and fat in dairy can help increase satiety and reduce overall calorie intake.
