Calcium from the sea?

Calcium from the sea?

Calcium is one of the most essential minerals for bone strength, muscle function, and overall wellness, but not all calcium supplements are created equal. We are now learning about algaebased calcium, which is certainly new to me. But this form of Calcium has piqued my interest. It has gained popularity as a natural, highly bioavailable alternative to traditional forms such as calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. But is it really better?

Algae‑based calcium comes from calcified red marine algae. Not only does it have Calcium, but it also has Magnesium (super important for everyone) and a ton of trace minerals, which basically help with absorption. I mean, why take it if we aren’t going to absorb it? That is a selling point for me. It also has minerals that help with Vitamin D activation. I get really excited about Vitamin D, so that’s another selling point for me.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been taking “regular Calcium.” Actually, if you’re like me, you’ve been buying it and then taking it at random, or barely at all. But that’s not the point here. The more common forms are either Calcium Carbonate or Calcium Citrate – neither are from algae. Carbonate is from limestone, coral, or marble and generally needs to be taken with food to help with absorption. Citrate is a synthetic form made up of Calcium and citric acid.

Don’t panic if you’re taking one of these. They certainly can help. Let’s look at algae-based forms before we decide whether to panic or not 😉.

Calcium from algae has a different structure that helps it dissolve in the digestive tract, which helps with absorption and avoiding gas, bloating and constipation. It also can help increase bone density – which we don’t always see in the other forms.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not meeting my Calcium goals with food, so a supplement is certainly recommended. Algae forms may be more expensive, but they might also be more beneficial than traditional forms. But hey, if those forms are working for you, then absolutely carry on!! If you’re looking for a change, you may just need to switch forms and give the algae-based Calcium a try.

Whatever you do, just remember to take it. That seems to be what trips me up most of the time. I have great intentions, but I’m forgetful and usually in some self-induced rush every single morning.
