Don't stop believing

I find people fascinating. I find people’s beliefs fascinating. For the sake of this exercise, I’ll just refer to these people as friends.

I have friends who have decided they shall never marry. They believe marriage, as a structure, unnecessary. I have friends who are living unhappily ever after because they believe that marriage is an unbreakable structure, so they spending their life angrily tethered to another unhappy human.

I have friends who believe that Republicans are the downfall of our civilization. I have friends who believe the Democrats are the downfall of our civilization.

I have friends who believe GMOs are wrecking our ability to have a sustainable food supply. I have friends who believe non-GMOs are wrecking our ability to have a sustainable food supply.

I have friends who believe dogs are superior pets. I have friends who believe cats are superior pets.

I have friends who believe they should surround themselves with people who are just like them. I have friends who believe they should surround themselves with people who are completely different than they.

I have friends who believe they are the victim of all the world’s most tragic tricks. I have friends who believe they are the master of their destiny and there’s always a silver lining on the horizon.

I have friends who believe they are wonderful people but cannot come up with one example to offer as proof. I have friends who believe they are terrible people as they sit atop a mountain of proof to the contrary.

I have friends who believe they need a little bit more. I have friends who believe they have too much.

I have friends who believe they’ve acted righteously while causing deep wounds in others. I have friends who believe they’ve not acted enough, as others try to keep up.

I find people fascinating. I find people’s beliefs fascinating. I believe I will try to be more understanding and I believe I will try to be kind.
