Host a recipe swap

Host a recipe swap

by Sam Vangsness

I recently took part in a local Saturday Swap with complete strangers, and it was so much fun. These are now people I have been able to visit with about canning, gardening, and making various homemade items. These events have helped me make new friends and get to visit about various things I enjoy, like homesteading and homemaking. But these get-togethers have also sparked another unique idea that could connect friends and new recipes.

Sam's first swap haul was fun and successful!

When we get together with friends and family, my first question is, “What can I bring?” Sharing and making food is my love language to others. I love sharing stories and recipes with people, but sharing recipes seems like such a lost art. Chit chatting about what your family enjoys to eat, a new recipe you found in a cookbook or magazine. I know I enjoy trying new recipes and figuring out different ways to bake and cook.

A few years ago, I was gifted some old editions of “Better Homes and Gardens” and “Country Living” magazines. I am still going through each edition, clipping out color swatches, design ideas, and recipes. This, coupled with some ideas I’ve come across on social media, inspired an idea of a recipe swap or a cookbook club.

The idea would be to gather and share a recipe for a specific entree or category (summer cookout, garden-fresh appetizer, etc.). The possibilities are endless and would give a chance to visit about new recipes.

Another spin on this could be that everyone makes a recipe from the same cookbook. Choose one cookbook, and everyone picks a recipe to make and bring. This would spark fun conversations about making the recipe and maybe even what you’d do differently.

I love connecting over food, and this brings together two of my favorite things. Although I’ve never hosted a get-together quite like this, I think I’ll have to put it on my summer list!
