I would like to submit my application for favorite houseplant. If someone could ensure I stay in the best temperature for me to thrive, while ensuring I am taken care of, adequately fed, watered, and fertilized on the regular, I’m set.
I would like to give up my current position of family decision-maker. I no longer want to take on the responsibilities of paying, planning, cleaning, curating, driving, debating, and doing. I would like to sit in a comfortable window, and be rotated if I seem to be getting too much sun.
Do you know what happens if I get too big? Do I get put on a diet or told to exercise more? Heck no techno. I get a bigger pot. It’s probably a prettier pot. That’s right: I get rewarded for getting bigger.
I need that kind of positivity in my life. In the meantime, here’s one of my favorite summer recipes, that you can serve out of your favorite fancy pot as it awaits a new resident:
North Dakota Dirt Cake
Crush a package of Oreos (I use a gallon ziplock bag and some rage)
Mix together 3 1/2 cups milk and 2 packages of vanilla pudding
Also mix 1/4 cup softened butter and a softened brick of cream cheese
Add 1/2 cup powdered sugar to the cream cheese mixture and then mix the two bowls of creamy goodness together.
Then fold in a container of cool whip a la David Rose.
Now layer: cookie crumbs, sugary fluffy goo, cookie crumbs
If you really want to get whimsical, throw some gummy worms or a fake plant on top. You can serve these single-cup style out of a 9×13 or in your favorite pot, preferably lined with Saran wrap.
While you think about how good houseplants have it, enjoy your dirt!
