Teens, TikTok and food trends

Teens, TikTok and food trends

by Elizabeth Magee, LRD

I’ve spent a fair amount of the past winter and spring weekending long trips on a bus full of teenagers. This has kept me up to date on all the latest trends and products I need. So much TikTok. Since this has been my life, I figured I’d tell you about latest food trends to land on our plate. I’ll let you decide if any are a go.

Right out of the gate we’re starting with cottage cheese. I NEVER buy cottage cheese. My youngest stepdaughter likes it but never asks for it. I didn’t even know my husband liked it until a few weeks ago when a reel piqued my interest (Low Carb Cottage Cheese Pizza Bowl (TikTok Viral!) - Wellness by Kay ). Turns out he does, so it wasn’t going to be a waste of a purchase.

Cottage cheese had 470 million views on TikTok and a 15.9% increase in sales over the last year. Who would have guessed it? Excellent news for dairy farmers. Great source of protein and calcium. Low carb if that’s your jam, but can be high in sodium if you’re watching that. My personal opinion is that I don’t think desserts need to be modified with cottage cheese. It just doesn’t sound satisfying to me. Cottage cheese cookie dough, cottage cheese and mustard as a dipping sauce, cottage cheese ice cream, cottage cheese with scrambled eggs and mustard,

Tinned fish. This one is cracking me up. I feel like my dad would have been super “on trend” with this. It's what it sounds like. Seafood in the little tins. Tuna, salmon, sardines. Truthfully, I didn’t even know these still existed (I only seem to notice the pouches at the store) and the reel I’m watching is making me gag a bit. I like fish, but I'm not excited about it being in a tin. Tin fish date night, tin fish for beginners…I can’t figure out how this became trendy with young people.

Fruit Roll-Up Ice Cream. I’m all over this. It looks so good. Take a fruit roll up, unroll it, put a scoop of ice cream in the middle and fold it up like a little wonton type deal and throw it in the freezer. I want to try it. I can’t understand how it wouldn’t be good, other than having fruit roll up in your teeth. But that’s why we have floss people.

I was excited that I didn’t stumble upon any weird diet/weightloss things going on that likely don’t work. No red flags from what I saw. Now I’m going to be getting ads about all the tinned fish so hopefully that passes quickly.

By the time you read this, I’m sure a whole new set of trends will be out there. But in the meantime I’m going to make a pizza cottage cheese bowl and try to convince one of the kids in the house to make the fruit roll up ice cream deal!!
