The importance of family traditions

The importance of family traditions

by Heather Lang

I'm big on family traditions and making memories. This weekend marked our annual deer hunt, a cherished event that brings us all together. On the opening weekend of deer season, my sister and I head up to our parent's house to go hunting with Dad. Mom, who is always extra thoughtful, prepares delicious meals that are ready for us when we return home each night. She makes sure to include our favorite meals and desserts, adding an extra layer of warmth and comfort to our evenings.

Our nights revolve around sharing memories, engaging in lively board games, and enjoying lots of laughter. Despite being married with our own families, it's crucial for us to continue this tradition, and we bring all the kids along.

I grew up close to many of my cousins with vacations centered around family. I admit that I took that for granted when I was younger. I assumed that was the norm for every family. I didn't know any different. I want the same for our kids. They are blessed to have so much family close by who attend many of their events, cheer them on at games, and celebrate all the milestones.

Mom's role has grown significantly over the years, as she now watches all the grandkids while we go out hunting. It's a role she embraces with love, ensuring that the kids have a wonderful time together. Even though my children are grown, with two of them driving and having their own jobs, they still make it a priority to join us for the weekend. The bonds and memories they create with their cousins are priceless, something they will treasure forever. Cousins and best friends for life.

This year, some of our kids expressed interest in joining us on our hunting walks. We're fortunate to have a hunting spot not far from my parent's house, allowing us to return home around lunchtime and pick up any young ones who wish to come along. It's heartwarming to see the younger generation eager to participate in a tradition that's been a part of our family for so long.

This weekend is so important to us that even when we are not drawn for a deer license, we still reserve the time to visit our parents with the kids. It's about more than just the hunt; it's about the togetherness, the laughter, and the memories we create. This time together is worth more than anything, a treasure that strengthens our family bonds.
