Our #NationalDonutDay poll has once again indicated that maple doughnuts are your favorite. Last year, they garnered 39% of the vote, and this year, they climbed to 46%. (See survey results below)
We started to wonder if this was a North Dakota thing, or if people in other states enjoy the maple kind as much as we do. While it was difficult to find a reputable, scientific (What, like this one? Ha! Ha!) survey, the overwhelming response was that "glazed" donuts are the most popular donut flavor in the United States. It was a distant third in our oh-so-representative-of-the-North-Dakota-donut-eating-public survey.
Rather than rely on the decidedly small sampling from our survey, we decided to dig a little deeper to find out what kind of donuts North Dakotans like to eat.
A search for "The most popular donut flavor in every state" yielded an article from Allrecipes.com that said it isn't even a donut that North Dakotans most often search for. In fact, using each state's donut-related Google searches "donut holes" were the clear winner in North Dakota and 11 other states. (We didn't even think to include donut holes on the list!)
But when you think about it, donut holes are really a better choice. When you just can't decide which donut flavor you want, you can graze on four different donut holes and end up with about the same number of calories as a standard donut. So being the practical folks we are here in North Dakota, it makes perfect sense.
That's our story, and we're sticking to it!
