Today, August 30, is #nationaltoastedmarshmallowday and at On Your Table, we’re all in on the celebration.
Who doesn’t like toasting marshmallows? Especially when you put the gooey goodness between a couple of graham crackers and a chunk of chocolate. Here’s a fun, family approved S’mores icebox cake recipe.
Marshmallows are comprised of just a few basic ingredients: gelatin, sugar, corn syrup, salt, vanilla extract and confectioner’s sugar.
Did you know that gelatin is a by-product of pigs and cattle? It is made from the bones, connective tissue and hide. The gelatin helps the marshmallow retain its shape and gives it that chewy texture.

And here's another fun fact, according to Wikipedia: S'mores is a contraction of Some More and was made popular by the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts back in the 1920s. In 1927, a recipe for "Some More" was published in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.
