Pre-Summer

Pre-Summer

By Kelli Bowen

After all of the chaos, a magical thing happens: pre-summer.

Pre-summer is when school is wrapping up so the children are full of excitement and anticipation. They’re running on adrenaline and hopes of a fun summer just around the corner.

Pre-summer is that 45 minutes where it’s warm enough to enjoy being outdoors without being carried away by mosquitoes. It’s the week where we aren’t freezing to death watching soccer and not roasting alive watching baseball.

Pre-summer is when we have the three months of summer rolled out in front of us, full of possibilities. We’re narrowing down which weekend we are going on a mini-vacation and synching vacation time schedules.

It’s the blissful idea that we may just be looking down the barrel of the BEST SUMMER EVER.

Hubby and I kicked off pre-summer with an outdoor concert at our favorite outdoor venue. We saw a LEGEND sing a medley from his 70-year long career. It was the most perfect weather. It wasn't hot but warm enough to not need a sweatshirt. The breeze was light and music filled the air.

Hubby was thankful that the songs were cut early when I asked him if he was going to dance with me.

After the show, we snuck over for a margarita at one of my favorite restaurants and while riding this amazing pre-summer high, I heard my phone ding.

“Mom I miss you so much. Come home now”.

Another sip. Ding. Hubby looked at me quizzically: “Work?” Ding.

“Nope. Miss A.”

Ding.

One thing about getting too lost in pre-summer bliss, as a parent, those little summer-adrenaline-filled-creatures will yank you right back to reality.

May your margaritas be stronger than the mom-guilt.
