NDFB highlights sugarbeets for Living Ag Classroom.
Did you know that North Dakota ranks #3 in the nation in sugarbeet production?
Sugarbeets are root crops. That means the part you eat is the actual root. Although a sugarbeet can be a foot long and weigh between 2 and 5 pounds, it starts out as a seed the size of a grain of rice.
When harvesting, a mechanical defoliator removes all the leaves from the beet root. Then a sugarbeet lifter-loader pulls beets from the soil and loads them on trucks.
Living Ag Classroom events are held January through April each year in several locations around the state. To get involved in events held during the next school year, contact Joey Bailey at joey@ndfb.org.
