Family matters

Topic: Issues

On Wednesday, April 17, Governor Doug Burgum signed House Bill 1388 — the second cousins bill — into law. At the heart of this effort has been the determination of the Galegher family from Grand Forks County. North Dakota’s anti-corporate farming laws have been a bone of contention for NDFB for a long, long time. Knowing you helped make a difference in the lives of two young farmers — Andrew Galegher and David Hovet — feels pretty good.

Second cousins now can enjoy the benefits a corporate business structure provides family farms like the Galeghers. Prior to this bill becoming law, they would have had to dissolve a perfectly functioning business structure to comply with our antiquated state law. That makes no sense at all.

Read what Amy Galegher had to say about the bill on the My NDFB Life blog.
