Good hair days on the horizon

Calving season is finally done for us. On our ranch, we start in early February and had our last straggler May 1. Do you know what this means? I can finally do my hair again! I understand this sounds a bit silly, but fellow female ranchers know what I’m talking about. It seems every time I tried to get away for a night my plans had to be canceled because of unforeseen issues with the cows.

I received many calls this winter asking when I would be home from work, because we had a problem. Or the days when I did work from home, I would get a call asking me to come out to help with a calf with a broken leg, or a cow who was on her back. Those are all parts of raising food animals, though, and it can be difficult, messy, frustrating and plan-changing, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
