Registration open for online FLP

Registration is now open for “Chewsy Choices for a Healthy Life,” the first of two online, interactive courses for teachers offered by the North Dakota Farm Bureau through  Project Food, Land and People (FLP).

A 55-lesson curriculum, Project Food, Land and People was developed to help grades K-12 educators to blend information about agriculture easily into their activities. The lessons are designed to stimulate imagination and creativity and have been rigorously tested and evaluated across the nation.

 “This program has helped thousands of North Dakota young people, especially those living in cities, better understand the role of agriculture in their state and in their lives,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “It helps them connect with our farms and ranches.”

Participating teachers receive the entire curriculum in CD format, together with materials specific to North Dakota and information about other available resources. The instructional units address core content and North Dakota state standards and benchmarks with inquiry-based learning activities that are meaningful and the objectives are well defined. 

North Dakota State University offers professional development graduate credit for participating in this program. The credit cost is $50.

“I am convinced that Food, Land, and People workshops have made me a better teacher,” said Mary Kensok, an award-winning teacher at Central Cass Elementary School in Casselton. “As a workshop participant, I was inundated with motivational, meaningful, multi-sensory learning experiences that could easily be woven into my fourth grade curriculum standards. Not only did I embrace the information, instructional strategies and massive resources, I formed long-term friendships with educators that share the same passion I have – teaching our youth the meaning of agriculture and the significant role it plays in their lives.”

Registration cost is $60. The program is available to all public and private school teachers, as well as parents home-schooling their children. Teachers should register before the course begins Sept. 17.
